Plant Labels – A Nursery Service

Necessity is the mother of invention. Our ancestors grappled with the problem of how to create long-lasting plant labels. Since it has always been difficult to differentiate various varieties of deciduous shrubs and trees during the main sales and planning periods, printed slips of paper were inserted into glass tubes which were shaped similarly to test tubes. Stoppers protected these early labels from water and humidity, and the tubes were attached to the plant with a wire. These ‘bottle labels’ are now true museum pieces and appear to us to be relics from long-forgotten eras.

And today?

Hermann Meyer thermo-transfer loop and thermo-transfer stand-up labels provide high-quality weather-proof printed labels, regardless of whether company logos, detailed plant descriptions or EAN codes are concerned. This makes it possible to incorporate plants into operational merchandizing processes. EAN codes printed on the labels can be read by scanners at cash registers in garden centers or nurseries.

Thermo-transfer labels are available either blank or printed. Color or multi-color print is recommended for high-quality reproductions of company logos or other similar symbols.

Additional space on the label or the back of the label can be used by nurseries for individual printing needs, such as EAN codes, plant descriptions, etc.

Nurseries can print their own laser color labels using a color laser printer. A digital camera can be used to make photographs to design labels for use in individual nurseries. Currently, loop and stand-up labels as well as DIN A4 or DIN A5 plant bed labels can be produced using this technology.

Two currently popular and extremely durable printing options for use in completely differing horticultural areas are: The "Printikett", a tie-on tag with an aluminum coating. A ballpoint pen can be used to write on this label. Writing is embossed into the material and is still clearly legible after years of use.

Although the Printikett is durable and robust, its optical qualities make it more primarily suitable for plant production areas. Significant optical improvements can be achieved by the use of:

The new laser-engraved signs: Hermann Meyer invested in this new technology in the year 2005. High-quality acrylic engraved signs with dimensions of 12 x 6 cm or 18 x 6 cm as well as high-quality matt-finished, anodized aluminum signs can be produced in the same dimensions using laser engraving equipment. In contrast to engraving technologies used in the past, these signs can also be manufactured with logos or other graphic symbols.

How it all began ...

The first machine-printable labels were made of PVC. In the mid-1950's, this material led to the great popularity of printed and blank tie-on labels. The production of time- and cost-saving tie-on labels continues to take place in the same tried-and-true manner. Each label is punched, eyed, wired and cut in a fraction of a second.

Patented rose hybrids have been identified for decades with printed tie-on labels. These labels provide proof that the rose plants they identify have been properly registered as licensed varieties. The development of various stamping dies has made the creation of loop and stand-up labels possible over the years.

Do-It-Yourself

A milestone in the history of plant labeling techniques was the introduction of loop labels created from a roll of plastic sheeting in the late 1950's (Tyvek labels first appeared on the market in the 1980's) for individual nursery printing. At the same time, stamping technologies were developed and electronic data processing systems were introduced in nurseries.

Our loop label rolls now make it possible for nurseries to modify labels to suit their own operational and marketing needs. In addition, the reduction of the need for manual labeling processes has led to significant cost savings.

For many years, Tyvek loop labels for dot matrix printers have been the leading labeling material on the market. These labels are available in a neutral white or in color in red, yellow, blue, orange, green and pink. Tyvek labels are available in practical sheets. Labels are fed directly from the pack into the printer. The material is tear-proof, resists the negative effects of humidity and mildew, and is highly flexible. It is optimally suited for printing using a computer printer. Printing dries immediately and is smear- and weather-proof.
